Brent Lee of The Koalition writes: 2017 was a big year in gaming, led by the debut of Nintendos Switch hybrid console, which redefined the relationship between handheld and television-based gaming consoles. The Xbox One X also hit the console market, while Kinect exited the scene. 2017 saw some smash-hit game releases, too, including breakout game of the year PlayerUnknowns Battlegrounds, the open-ended physics driven adventure The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and the 3D-platform triumph Super Mario Odyssey.
2018 promises more big gaming developments, including innovations in virtual and augmented reality, possible new consoles, and exciting upcoming games. Heres a preview of three of the top gaming trends to watch over the coming year.

VGChartz's Evan Norris: "With PS4 at the peak of its power, indie developers pushing the envelope, and Nintendo Switch serving notice that it's here to stay, 2017 saw a glut of amazing software. The indie darling Cuphead won the hearts and minds of critics and consumers with its punishing difficulty and Max Fleischer cartoon aesthetic. Horizon: Zero Dawn impressed with gorgeous graphics, intense combat, and a vast open world. The Switch launch title Breath of the Wild proved to be a killer app for Nintendo's upstart hybrid. Atlus' Persona 5 won over a legion of fans thanks to its impressive art direction, battle system, and story. And finally Super Mario Odyssey, in a year of game-of-the-generation candidates, actually scored the highest. There was no shortage of greatness in 2017."

We think the Switch appeals to pretty much every type of gamer out there. People who own a PS4 and/or Xbox One, PC gamers, as well as hardcore and casual gamers." -- Nintendo Enthusiast

Steve C writes: "Even the most ardent of Xbox fans cant deny that that 2017 was not one of the best for our beloved system. It wasnt a complete write-off as there was still the release of the brilliant Xbox One X, we finally got Cuphead, and Forza Motorsport 7 was the best racing game released last year (on any system). Unfortunately (though great for the games industry as a whole), Microsofts competitors had a great year. Sony had titles like the great Horizon Zero Dawn and an array of Japanese games like Persona 5, Nioh, Nier: Automata, Yakuza 0, and Gravity Rush 2. Nintendo hit its stride again with the superb Switch and titles like Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Super Mario Odyssey, Splatoon 2, Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle, and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. All of these games reinforced the ideas that Nintendo is the best place for younger gamers, while PlayStation is the home of Japanese games for the rest of the world. This got me thinking, what image does Xbox have and what...
